After being fired by the Philadelphia Eagles following just one season as quarterbacks coach, Alex Tanney has found a new role with the Indianapolis Colts, reuniting with former Eagles coach Shane Steichen. Tanney and Steichen previously worked together on Nick Sirianni’s staff with the Eagles in 2021 and 2022.
During his time with the Eagles, Tanney served as an offensive quality control coach in 2021 and as an assistant quarterbacks coach under Brian Johnson in 2022. His exact role with the Colts is currently unknown. However, his connections with Steichen and other former Eagles coaches likely played a role in his hiring.
Tanney, who had a brief playing career as a backup quarterback in the NFL, transitioned into coaching after retiring from playing in 2020. Despite his limited coaching experience, he was promoted to quarterbacks coach by Sirianni in 2022.
The Eagles, undergoing changes to their coaching staff, opted not to retain Tanney for the upcoming season. Instead, they brought in veteran coach Doug Nussmeier to work with new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.
Tanney’s departure from the Eagles marks the second member of Sirianni’s 2023 staff to find a new job, following secondary coach D.K. McDonald, who was hired by the Kansas Jayhawks. Meanwhile, the deposed coordinators from the Eagles’ 2023 staff, including Brian Johnson, Matt Patricia, and Sean Desai, have yet to find new positions.
As the Eagles continue to restructure their coaching staff under new coordinators Vic Fangio and Moore, the only member from the 2023 staff expected to remain is offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland.
