Next Sunderland manager candidate holds ‘positive talks’ with Championship club
According to a source from our sister, Danny Rohl had “good talks” with Sheffield on Wednesday.
Danny Rohl, who led Sheffield Wednesday to an improbable Championship relegation this season, is reportedly attracting interest from Sunderland should he decide to leave Sheffield Wednesday this summer.
Despite a terrible start to the season before Rohl took over for Xisco Munoz, Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon guaranteed their second-tier status for another term. The German’s efforts have not gone unappreciated, and Sunderland is among several teams eager to sign him if he becomes available this summer.
But according to the Sheffield Star, Rohl and Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri have had “good initial talks” about Sheffield Wednesday’s future ambitions.
The Star knows that the two had preliminary discussions in the days preceding the trip to Wearside, and that additional conversations have since been place with Championship safety guaranteed. As things stand, there is a strong anticipation that Röhl will lead the club into the summer, according to a source who spoke with The Star. Discussions had been “generally quite pleasant.”
The German coach is eager to move forward with his transfer plans in the hopes of having the majority of the team assembled before the end of June, when preseason play kicks out, according to The Star. There are rumors that discussions on the club’s upcoming retained list, at least with select players, have also taken place. There has also been discussion on transfer strategy. It’s known that Röhl will take a vacation this week before both sides resume their discussions.
During his post-match press conference last weekend, Rohl answered questions about his future at Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland’s interest, saying, “You know what it means to me today, therefore I will not speak about my future. I want to enjoy and then we will see what we can do, or not.” I’ve met with the chairman once this week; we will schedule other meetings as soon as feasible, and then we’ll see. I met with the players numerous times, but it is not the main point of discussion today. Although I know you’re curious, it’s crucial that we have fun this evening. We must savor the moment and be content while doing this.
“We had a decent start to the game, but Sunderland wasted a few opportunities, so maybe they scored on a different day. Now you are down and under increasing pressure,” Rohl said. “I think the last few weeks we have spoken about our pressing and how compact we are, but today we scored beautiful goals from ball possession and our build up. I think the two goals were fantastic builds up.
“We have a lot of tools to beat the opponent because of the work we have done over the last six months.” We can now appreciate this because our ability to make decisions has continued to improve. To be honest, I’m just tired today.
