Michigan Wolverines interested in former top New York Giants assistant for prominent role
The Michigan Wolverines face the challenge of not only replacing championship-winning head coach Jim Harbaugh but also finding a successor for defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, who departed for the Los Angeles Chargers after leading the nation’s top scoring defense last season.
One name that has emerged as a potential candidate for the Wolverines is former New York Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. According to reports by Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports, Martindale is garnering interest from both Michigan and NFL teams.
Martindale, 60, is highly regarded in football circles and brings a wealth of experience to the table. He most recently served as the Giants’ defensive coordinator for two seasons before mutually parting ways with the organization after the 2023 season due to perceived issues with head coach Brian Daboll.
Prior to his tenure with the Giants, Martindale held defensive coordinator positions with the Denver Broncos in 2010 and the Baltimore Ravens from 2018 to 2021. Throughout his career, he has overseen three top-10 defenses, showcasing his ability to lead successful defensive units at the highest level of competition.
Indeed, it appears that Michigan is exploring options from the professional ranks to fill the crucial defensive coordinator position vacated by Jesse Minter. While Wink Martindale’s extensive experience and success in coaching defense at the professional level make him an intriguing candidate, it’s worth noting that he hasn’t coached at the college level since his tenure as the defensive coordinator for Western Kentucky in 2003.
Transitioning from coaching in the NFL to the college level can present unique challenges, including adapting to the different dynamics of working with younger athletes, recruiting, and adjusting to the collegiate game’s pace and style. However, Martindale’s wealth of experience and defensive expertise could still make him a valuable asset for Michigan if they decide to pursue him for the role.
