Breaking Chicago Bears News: Jaylon Johnson Designated with Franchise Tag

Published

on

Despite Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles expressing confidence at the NFL Scouting Combine about reaching a contract extension with Jaylon Johnson, the team applied the franchise tag on him ahead of the deadline, with a $19.8MM salary for the 2024 season. The Bears and Johnson now have until July 15 to secure a long-term deal, and this tagged amount may serve as the baseline for any potential agreement. Johnson, too, has conveyed optimism about a new contract and is open to playing under the franchise tag if necessary. As the Bears focus on solidifying their defense, Johnson’s improved performance in his second year positions him as a key player. The release of veteran safety Eddie Jackson not only created salary cap space but also sets Johnson up as the veteran leader in the secondary. With the likelihood of drafting Caleb Williams and resetting the quarterback contract clock, the Bears aim to secure Johnson’s extension for a potential four-year duration.
