‘Some training’ – Martin issues fresh Stewart fitness update after ‘whack’ taken

Russell Martin, the manager of SAINTS, stated that Ross Stewart had a “whack” versus West Brom during Friday’s somewhat shorter warm-up.

The 27-year-old, who had to wait until November to return from injury, had made substitute outings against Leeds and the Baggies.

Stewart was slated by Martin to have an influence, but for the second leg of the Championship playoff semi-final, he was benched.

The former Sunderland player did not play throughout the game; he simply warmed up for halftime and before the game in a much smaller capacity.

Without the Scot, Saints prevailed 3-1, and Martin is certain he’ll be alright to play Leeds United in Sunday’s Wembley final.

Martin clarified in an interview with the Daily Echo: “He’s fine, definitely.”

He suffered a knock during the first leg, although he has since participated in some training, and his usage tonight was limited to emergencies.

We sincerely hope that he will be fully recovered and ready for the championship game. We have two very significant choices with Che Adams.”

Following his surgery in January 2023 to treat an Achilles injury, Stewart has not participated in a regular football league.

Adams was also not included. Adams has an expiring contract this summer and appears likely to sign a free transfer with Wolves, who are considered to be advanced.

The 27-year-old missed both legs of the Championship season due to a calf injury he suffered at Elland Road on the last day of play.
