Sheffield Wednesday to make move for former Chelsea man after starring role at Hillsborough

Without Iké Ugbo’s goals, it’s definitely safe to assume Sheffield Wednesday wouldn’t be in the Championship anymore.

The former Chelsea player joined Hillsborough during the January transfer window, and in his 18 league games, he contributed eight goals and eight assists to help the Owls pull off the incredible comeback and secure their spot in the second division for the next campaign.

It should come as no surprise to learn that Wednesday is interested in bringing Ugbo back for the upcoming season, as he gained popularity while playing for S6 and received high marks for both his goals and general play from Danny Röhl.

Given that he still has two years remaining on his present contract with ESTAC Troyes in Ligue 2, it could not be easy to complete, but since they are in danger of dropping to the third division of French football, a deal at a reduced cost might be possible.

The 25-year-old’s play in the second part of the season has undoubtedly caught the attention of rival teams, but The Star has learned that Danny Röhl and the Owls are hopeful that the player’s recent stint in South Yorkshire would aid them in their quest.

In a post on social media on Wednesday, he expressed gratitude to supporters for their encouragement during his loan stint, writing, “Thank you everyone for the experience you have given me this season… Upon my initial January membership, I was aware of the upward struggle we would have to endure. However, I sensed from the beginning that the club’s unity would help us get through.

We accomplished the task thanks to the manager’s faith in us and the fans’ unwavering support. Our adventure together has been one I will never forget, even if it has only been a few months. I am grateful, Owls.

Although this newspaper has previously reported that Wednesday is keen to pursue a deal to sign fellow loanee Ian Poveda permanently, that deal may be easier to complete with fewer moving parts due to Poveda’s status as a free agent as of July 1.

In order to best prepare for the upcoming season, Röhl has expressed in the past his desire to close transactions as quickly as possible during the summer. If they were able to reach an agreement with Troyes and Ugbo, it would be extremely beneficial for their 2024–2025 preparations.
