Ex-Sheffield Wednesday man says he was ‘absolutely’ surprised at the club’s decision to release him
After being let go by Sheffield Wednesday in 2022, a former player has voiced shock at the decision.
Sheffield Wednesday is getting a bad reputation for letting go of players and then bringing in a ton of free agents.
This has been the situation for the past few summer transfer windows as the team appears to be making up for lost ground in the Championship from prior years.
Furthermore, Danny Rohl might not have many resources available to him for any kind of player recruitment this summer.
However, former Owl Saido Berahino conducted a Q&A on X on Wednesday, during which he was questioned if he was shocked that the team chose to let him go in 2022.
Saido Berahino reacts to Sheffield Wednesday exit
The 30-year-old Berahino moved to Hillsborough from Belgium for the 2021–2022 season, having previously played for West Brom under former manager Darren Moore.
Overall, though, Berahino was a good addition, making 36 appearances for the Owls while recording nine goals and four assists.
However, after losing out on promotion to the Championship, the team made the decision to let go of the former Stoke City and West Brom player at the end of the season.
When asked if the choice surprised him, Berahino said, “Yes, absolutely.”
Although Berahino’s contract with Cyprus’ AEL Limassol expires in the summer, he currently plays for the team.
Were Sheffield Wednesday too quick to release Saido Berahino
After a less physical period in Belgium, Berahino joked that he was pushed back into the gym and admitted that the toughness of League One caught him off guard.
However, there was an area of his game that needed improvement, and his Sheffield Wednesday goal total was impressive.
Nine goals in a tough League One in his first season back in England after a difficult few years wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t spectacular either.
And he might have been a major contributor for the Owls in the ensuing 2022–2023 season if he had been given more time to build on that campaign and acclimate to the demands of English football.
Thus, if Berahino is retained, he might even be playing for the team right now. Under Rohl, the attacker might have developed and found some of his former form.
However, things didn’t work out, and Berahino finds himself at a crossroads once more as his contract expires in the summer.
A return to England would undoubtedly be entertaining to watch, and teams would undoubtedly be willing to take a chance on him.
