When Sunderland plays Norwich City this weekend, they are “hopeful” to have one important player return.

Sunderland is facing a crucial match as they aim to end their winless streak, having suffered three consecutive defeats. Their away form has been particularly troubling, with just one win in their last 12 away games.

Unfortunately, they will still be without Dan Ballard due to suspension, and several key players such as Patrick Roberts, Aji Alese, Dennis Cirkin, Niall Huggins, Corry Evans, Elliot Embleton, and Bradley Dack could also miss out due to various reasons.

However, there is some hope for Sunderland fans as manager Mike Dodds is optimistic about Jack Clarke’s potential return from injury. Clarke, who sustained an injury against Birmingham, was initially expected to be sidelined for a few weeks, but it seems the injury may not be as severe as feared. The club is hopeful that Clarke will be fit to play, although his availability is still uncertain at this stage.

Additionally, journalist Phil Smith suggests that Romaine Mundle could be in line for a starting role after being left out in the previous match. Mundle’s inclusion could provide a boost to Sunderland as they look to turn their fortunes around.

What adjustments ought Sunderland to make for Norwich?

It seems Sunderland’s lineup for the upcoming match against Norwich could see potential changes depending on Jack Clarke’s fitness. If Clarke is available, there is a possibility that both him and Romaine Mundle could start on either wing, providing a dynamic attacking threat for Sunderland.

Abdoullah Ba, who struggled to make an impact in the previous match against Swansea, might be relegated to the bench to make way for Clarke and Mundle. Both Clarke and Mundle possess qualities that could trouble the Norwich defense, and their inclusion in the starting lineup could offer a fresh attacking dimension for Sunderland.

It seems like there are some tactical decisions being considered for the upcoming match due to the absence of a 23-year-old “super talent.” One option being discussed is moving Nazariy Rusyn to a wider position, as he has shown liveliness in recent weeks but may not be suited for a central role. Instead, Luis Hemir Semedo, who showed promise when coming on as a substitute in the previous match, could be given a chance to start.

There’s a recognition that changes are needed after a poor run of form, and the frontline might hold the key to improving results. It’s likely that adjustments will be made to the defensive lineup as well, with Mike Dodds likely reconsidering the back five from the last match.

Additionally, there’s a suggestion to give Chris Rigg an opportunity in the midfield. Despite being a teenager and yet to start a game for Sunderland, Rigg has made positive impacts in his appearances off the bench. The current midfield trio of Ekwah-Jobe-Neil has been criticized for its underwhelming performances, so introducing Rigg could inject some freshness and energy into the midfield.
