Sunderland handed boost in pursuit of attacking target
With Chris Willock’s contract with Queens Park Rangers set to expire, Sunderland will have an advantage in their pursuit of the Championship winger.
The Stadium of Light will require extensive renovations if the Black Cats hope to contend for promotion the following year. After placing sixth in the 2022–2023 season, the team finished 16th this year, 17 points outside the playoffs and just six above the relegation zone.
After three different head coaches in the last ten months, the board will need to select the ideal manager to lead them across the finish line next year. However, if Sunderland hopes to contend for promotion in the 2024–2025 campaign, then quality additions to the first team roster are also crucial.
Willock is one name that has been associated with relocating to the Wearside establishment. Two weeks ago, the Roker Report disclosed that Southampton is in negotiations with the 26-year-old in an attempt to bolster their attacking lineup.
With Willock’s contract about to expire and QPR anticipated to make an announcement shortly about his future, the Black Cats now have even more incentive to recruit the former Huddersfield Town loanee.
Journalist Alan Nixon claims that Norwich City is also vying for his signing. The Canaries are trying to capture the Arsenal youth product even if they don’t get promoted back to the Premier League.
Willock has had a fantastic season with QPR. On Saturday, he made his 100th start for the team and Marti Cifuentes’ team won 2-1 away at Coventry City to cap off the season in style. Additionally, this was presumably his final appearance for the London outfit in all competitions. It was his 39th overall.
Willock would be a fantastic addition to Sunderland. He is a skilled player with a plenty of experience who can score goals and also plays effectively as a winger. But this summer, he’s garnering a lot of attention.
Being a free agent and having a player of Willock’s caliber is uncommon, therefore it’s not shocking that several teams are interested in signing him. Norwich might be the favorites if they are able to secure promotion to the Premier League.
