‘Led to believe…’: Journalist backs Sheffield Wednesday star to leave just one year after signing

It is now possible that one Sheffield Wednesday player, who joined the team permanently only a year ago, will depart this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday is once more planning a major summer transfer since several Hillsborough players are ending their contracts.

However, Danny Rohl and Dejphon Chansiri, the club’s owner, will be hopeful that this summer will bring about some long-lasting changes.

According to sources, Sheffield Wednesday has already started to upgrade its training facilities in the wake of fruitful negotiations between Rohl and Chansiri over Rohl’s future with the team.

But this summer, there will still be a lot of player departures. Further on the list of names rumored to depart the team before the following campaign is defender Reece James.

After assisting the Owls in their promotion from League One, the 30-year-old re-signed on a permanent basis last summer; however, he has only made eight appearances in the Championship since then.

Wednesday is Reece James’ departure from Sheffield predicted

On Tuesday, journalist Joe Crann broke the story on X. According to him, left-back James only committed to a one-year contract last summer, with the possibility of an additional year.

James is reportedly “anticipated” to depart S6 this summer due to his lack of playing time since Rohl’s arrival, and Crann notes that there is a lot of interest in the former Doncaster Rovers player.

When Sheffield Wednesday comes around, Danny Rohl has one thing to watch out for.

James is a highly regarded footballer by Sheffield Wednesday supporters. It’s astonishing that Rohl has given him such little attention since his arrival in October considering how much class he displayed during the League One promotion season.

James, though, simply doesn’t fit into Rohl’s back-five-heavy style of play. He plays more like a typical left-back in a back-four, a configuration that Rohl hardly ever uses.

James’ decision to move on this summer makes sense. Nevertheless, James is presumably the only natural left-back at the team because Marvin Johnson is more of a wing-back, making Rohl’s left-back position extremely light.

Therefore, James’ departure could leave that position severely empty, and the team will need to make sure they can fill it with fresh players before the 2024–2025 season begins.

Interest in the defender could mean that James leaves quite quickly; a transfer to the Championship or League One seems to be the Englishman’s best option.

He’ll be eager to play some regular football after a challenging season, and Sheffield Wednesday supporters will remember him fondly when he departs.
