As the New York Giants approach the 2024 roster-building season with uncertainties on their offensive line, particularly at right tackle and both guard positions, there is speculation about making a significant move in free agency. Mike Onwenu, a 2020 sixth-round pick by the New England Patriots, stands out as a talented and versatile player with extensive NFL experience at right tackle and both guard spots.

If the Giants decide to pursue the 26-year-old, who stands at 6 feet 3 inches and weighs 350 pounds, it is likely to be for the right tackle position, potentially with the intention of moving Evan Neal inside. Another option could be starting Onwenu inside initially and later shifting him to right tackle if Neal faces challenges in proving himself at that position.

Pro Football Focus ranks Onwenu as the 25th-best free agent overall and the top true right tackle, estimating a potential four-year, $58 million contract ($14.5 million annually) with $33.25 million guaranteed.

Onwenu’s versatility has been evident throughout his NFL career, having played at various positions during his rookie contract. In the 2023 season, he returned to right tackle, where he displayed proficiency as a solid pass protector and a strong gap scheme blocker. While not the quickest off the line due to his massive frame, Onwenu compensates with strength, excelling in the run game with a solid base and heavy hands.

The Athletic ranks Onwenu as its No. 53 free agent, with former NFL GM Randy Mueller expressing a preference for him as a guard. Although fitting best at guard, Onwenu has been the Patriots’ most natural-footed athlete and a reliable option at tackle. Despite lacking ideal length, he showcases good base and technique, enabling him to maintain excellent position on contact and sustain with balance and recovery. With over 1,300 career snaps at both right tackle and right guard, along with 386 snaps at left guard, Onwenu brings valuable experience to the table.

The Giants face uncertainties not only with Neal as a tackle but also at guard, given the status of free agents Justin Pugh, Ben Bredeson, and Shane Lemieux. Mark Glowinski is expected to be cut, while Josh Ezeudu and Marcus McKethan remain unproven.

For Giants fans, the question arises: Is Mike Onwenu a player you would like to see GM Joe Schoen pursue in free agency?
