The player returned to Wigan this season after playing for Hearts the previous season.

As the former Hearts player looks for a new club, Stephen Humphrys has stated that he has left Wigan Athletic.

After spending the previous season at Tynecastle on loan from the Latics, the attacker scored 11 goals and provided four assists in League One down south. During his tenure at Gorgie, he scored five goals and provided two assists in 25 games, including one from his own half against Dundee United, earning him a warm reception from the Jambos fan base.

But his next campaign will not be in white and blue. Humphrys has now determined that it is time to move on with his contract expiring, following layoffs at Wigan and discussions with Shaun Maloney, the former Hibs manager who is currently manager of the third-tier team. “It’s with a heavy heart that my time at Wigan has come to an end,” he posted on social media.

“Unfortunately, the club and I were unable to reach an understanding over my contract, which would have allowed me to remain, after talking with the manager and learning about the new structure and reductions the team will be making under the new ownership.

“This is a brief career, and you have to determine what’s best for yourself and your family in the long run. I would have wanted to be a member of this fantastic club for longer.”

“At this club, I have created lifelong friendships, created incredible moments, and got support from the fans that I will always be grateful for. I sincerely appreciate everything. I hope the club has the best possible future.
