Detroit radio host offers alternate idea about Lions’ plan with Jared Goff

Even if it is lower on the Detroit Lions’ priority list for contract extensions, Jared Goff’s next deal is inevitable. Even though Memorial Day is still more than two weeks away in May, there shouldn’t be any major cause for alarm until training camp opens in late July. Even so, Week 1 would remain a more difficult timetable to complete the transaction.

General manager Brad Holmes spoke extensively on Thursday morning, but he didn’t really address the status of the contract negotiations with Goff. As anticipated, which is alright. In terms of the state of negotiations, neither direction matters. Still, it’s important to remember that time is progressively running out.

There has been a “when, not if” attitude surrounding the Lions and Goff’s agent working together on a long-term contract. Holmes recognized the extra complexity of a quarterback contract, along with all of its associated costs and long-term effects on the team’s ability to assemble a roster.

Few people doubt that Goff will remain the quarterback for the Lions for a few more seasons after 2024. Could that, however, alter?

A Detroit radio personality offers a different interpretation of the Lions’ plans with Jared Goff.
On the 97.1 The Ticket show “The Daily Ticket” on Wednesday, Jeff Riger discussed the circumstances surrounding Goff.

“So, let’s go back a few weeks to when the draft was available. Penei Sewell and Amon-Ra St. Brown receive contract extensions the Wednesday before the draft. ‘Goff is next,’ thought every Lions supporter, frosting on the cake.”

After learning about the new contracts for St. Brown and Sewell, Riger cited ESPN’s Adam Schefter’s quick report, which stated that “no deal was close” at the time and that a deal for Goff was not “imminent.” Prior to Holmes’ Thursday radio appearance, as Riger noted, we had not heard anything since then. Once more, Holmes merely struck all the right chords without contributing anything profound.

A week or two ago, Riger recalled, he was performing a show and someone asked him a question about the Lions and Goff.

“Who is more in need of the other?”

Riger went on, giving his response to that query.

Does Jared Goff require the Lions any more? Is Goff more important to the Lions? What’s the response? When you think about something, what comes to mind first?….”Goff needs the Lions more,” was my immediate thought upon hearing this topic and being asked it.

Riger gave Holmes due credit for his contributions to the Lions roster construction, noting that Goff is in a special position that does not currently exist elsewhere. The quarterback is on any other club that has a roster as strong as the Lions’.

Goff might not receive the recognition he merits, according to Riger, so perhaps the Lions need him more. Riger then strayed to a new notion before returning to Goff’s need for the Lions.

“Alternatively, and we haven’t even acknowledged this…we haven’t even given this any attention…Perhaps Brad Holmes has absolutely no intention of signing Jared Goff again.”

In his capacity as general manager of the Lions, Riger recognized Holmes’ contribution to the Rams’ selection of Goff and their trade for him. The “elephant in the room,” though, is Hendon Hooker, a third-round selection from the previous season who will have an opportunity to establish himself this offseason.

Riger pondered, “Is it possible that Brad Holmes has absolutely no desire to offer Jared Goff large sums of money?”

Riger stated that the Lions may franchise tag Goff in 2025, despite how implausible that scenario is. They could potentially control the contract for that two years, at which point Goff would turn 31.

To say that Brad Holmes and the Lions have no plans to extend Goff is definitely different. Riger wasn’t quite all in on the warm take, even as he recommended it and discussed it. However, the question doesn’t seem all that absurd at first glance.

This is “The Daily Ticket” in its entirety. Around 4:30 is when the Lions and Goff section begins.
