Exclusive interview: ‘I am here to score goals for Hibs’
Eliezer Mayenda, the rising star of Hibs at just 16 years old, surprises many by choosing “patience” as the most crucial quality in football. Despite the fast-paced nature of the game and the whirlwind world of transfers, Mayenda believes that waiting for the right opportunity is essential.
The Spanish youngster, on loan from Sunderland and still only 18, sees patience as vital for seizing chances in a constantly moving environment. He acknowledges the expectations placed on young players but remains focused on his love for the game and his determination to succeed.
Reflecting on his early professional debut at the age of 16 for French club Sochaux, Mayenda emphasizes the importance of patience in handling pressure and expectations. He admits that dealing with the demands of professional football at such a young age was challenging but credits his passion for the game for helping him through.
Despite facing setbacks, including a hamstring injury shortly after joining Sunderland, Mayenda remains optimistic about his future. He appreciates the opportunity to develop at Hibs and is determined to contribute positively to the team’s success.
Mayenda’s limited appearances for Hibs so far have shown promise, but he acknowledges the challenges of adapting to a new environment. His experience at Sunderland, where he struggled to secure regular playing time under a new manager, has taught him the value of patience and perseverance in football.
Overall, Mayenda remains committed to working hard and seizing opportunities as they come, demonstrating a mature understanding of the game beyond his years.
