FA announce decision that affects Birmingham City as £33m pledge made

The FA Cup will undergo a significant change starting from next season, as replays will no longer be part of the competition. This decision follows a landmark agreement between The FA and the Premier League, aiming to streamline the schedule and alleviate the strain on top-flight clubs caused by UEFA’s expanded program.

Starting from rounds one to four, replays will be scrapped, aligning with the already existing rule for the fifth round and beyond. The move comes as a result of extensive negotiations between The FA and the Premier League, with the latter providing up to £33 million in additional funding to grassroots football to compensate for the financial impact on lower league clubs.

The FA’s statement highlighted the Premier League’s increased commitment to funding grassroots football, with up to £133 million per season allocated from the 2025-26 season. This additional support aims to enhance various areas of the game and facilitate its continued growth.

For Birmingham City, this means that their FA Cup fixtures in the 2024/25 season will be decided on the day, eliminating the possibility of replays. The announcement comes after Blues exited the competition at the fourth round stage this year, having advanced from the third round via a replay against Hull City.
