Newcastle United make FA Cup announcement after Sunderland controversy

Newcastle United’s upcoming FA Cup fifth-round match against Blackburn Rovers is expected to draw a significant away following, with around 7,000 tickets allocated to Magpies’ fans. The match will take place at Ewood Park on Tuesday, February 27, with ticket prices set at £20 for adults, £10 for concessions (18 to 23 year-olds and over-65s), and £5 for under-18s.

However, there was controversy surrounding a previous fixture between Newcastle and Sunderland, as Newcastle fans were allocated an unusually high number of tickets (6,000) for a derby match at the Stadium of Light. This decision was met with shock and disappointment from some, including Sunderland supporter Dominic McDonough, who expressed concerns about potential tensions and the logistical challenges of managing such a large away contingent.

Despite these concerns, the fixture was effectively managed by Northumbria Police, with little trouble reported during the match. Newcastle United emerged victorious with a 3-0 win, courtesy of an own goal by Dan Ballard and a brace from Alexander Isak. The organized travel arrangements, including coaches from St James’ Park for Newcastle fans, likely contributed to the smooth operation of the match.
