U2
U2’s The Edge has shared details about a new side project he’s working on with Bono, which might be featured on the band’s upcoming album. Here’s the latest update.
U2 guitarist The Edge hinted that he and Bono are collaborating on music that might make its way onto the band’s next album.
In an interview with the *Toronto Star*, The Edge shared insights into U2’s current activities. While the band has recorded sessions with drummer Larry Mullen Jr. and bassist Adam Clayton, The Edge and Bono have also been independently creating, amassing “a lot of material.” However, the guitarist noted that the exact purpose of this project remains uncertain, though it could ultimately contribute to the band’s next release.
The Edge has shared intriguing details about a creative endeavor he’s pursuing with Bono, describing it as an “Irish sci-fi folk” project that could potentially feature on U2’s next album. “We’re not sure yet, but we’re excited about that,” he said, hinting at the experimental nature of their collaboration.
While it’s uncertain if this project will stand alone or become part of the band’s upcoming work, The Edge expressed optimism about U2’s current direction. “There’s also some U2 recording sessions coming up,” he noted. He mentioned a recent session with drummer Larry Mullen Jr., who, after taking a cautious approach to recovery, is playing well. “That was a thrill for us,” The Edge added, highlighting the positive momentum within the band.
If the “Irish sci-fi folk” material evolves into a side project, it wouldn’t be the first time Bono and The Edge have ventured beyond U2. The duo previously collaborated on the theme song for the James Bond film *GoldenEye* and composed the music for the Broadway musical *Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark*.
What’s Next for U2?
Currently, U2 appears to be in the early stages of crafting their next album, which would mark their first release of new material since 2017’s *Songs of Experience*. In the years since, the band has shared singles like “Ahimsa,” “Your Song Saved My Life” (from the *Sing 2* soundtrack), and “Atomic City.”
In 2023, they released their 15th studio album, *Songs of Surrender*, a reimagining of 40 songs from their back catalog. This collection presented new arrangements of some of their most iconic tracks, offering a fresh take on familiar favorites.
*Songs of Surrender* was closely tied to Bono’s memoir, *Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story.* Following the book’s release, Bono embarked on a solo tour titled *Stories of Surrender.* While no other U2 members joined him, he performed alongside Kate Ellis, Gemma Doherty, and Jacknife Lee, a frequent producer for the band.
U2 also recently concluded their first-ever concert residency, held at the Sphere in Las Vegas, Nevada. From September 29, 2023, to March 2, 2024, the band performed 40 shows centered around their 1991 album, *Achtung Baby.* Each concert featured the album played in its entirety for the first time in U2’s history.
Notably, drummer Larry Mullen Jr. was unable to join the residency due to health issues. Bono, The Edge, and Adam Clayton were instead accompanied by Bram van den Berg, the drummer from Krezip, who filled in for Mullen at every show.
