Sheffield, [Date] – The B. Braun Sheffield Sharks continued their pursuit of the top spot in the Super League Basketball Championship with an eighth consecutive victory, defeating Cheshire Phoenix on the road. Despite trailing by 17 points early in the third quarter, the Sharks mounted an extraordinary comeback with a 20-53 second-half run, capped by a 6-27 final quarter.

Rickey McGill delivered a career-best performance, scoring 29 points, with Donovan Clay adding 20 and Prentiss Nixon contributing 19. Their efforts ensured the Sharks remain level with the London Lions at the top of the standings heading into the FIBA international break.

Key Moments

Cheshire established an early lead with crucial plays at the end of the first quarter. The Sharks called for an early timeout following Skyler White’s jump shot at 10-6 and subsequently traded baskets with their hosts. Cam Holden’s three-pointer was matched by Rickey McGill and later by Rodney Glasgow Jr’s floater, tying the game at 19-19. However, a Greg Wild three-pointer and a half-court buzzer-beater from White pushed Cheshire ahead 25-19 at the start of the second quarter.

The Phoenix capitalized on their three-point shooting prowess, with Tyreek Scott-Grayson and TJ Atwood extending their lead to 33-25. Although Donovan Clay’s aggressive drives and McGill’s creativity kept the Sharks within reach at 35-31, Cheshire closed the half strongly, leading 45-34 at the break.

After Cheshire extended their lead to 51-34, the Sharks responded emphatically. McGill and Prentiss Nixon drained crucial three-pointers, sparking a 0-12 run that cut the deficit to 51-46. Continued defensive pressure and smart offensive play saw the Sharks take the lead at 58-60, with Clay drawing fouls in the paint. A late free throw from Wild left the score at 59-60 entering the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was a masterclass from Sheffield. The Sharks went on a remarkable 0-23 run over nearly nine minutes, sealing an emphatic victory. Nixon, Glasgow Jr (twice), and McGill sank three-pointers, while Nixon remained flawless from the free-throw line. A technical foul on Cheshire’s coach Ben Thomas further tilted the game in Sheffield’s favor. Despite a late basket from Atwood, the Sharks secured a dominant 65-87 victory.

MVP Performance

While Jamell Anderson’s defensive contributions (6 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist) were crucial, three standout performances fueled the Sharks’ victory. Nixon’s composure at the line saw him finish with 19 points, 8 rebounds, and 1 assist. Clay dominated the paint, recording 20 points, 8 rebounds, an assist, and 2 steals. However, Rickey McGill claimed MVP honors with a stellar 29-point performance, including 5 of 8 from three-point range and 8 of 10 from the free-throw line, alongside 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and a steal. His efforts ensured the Sharks maintained their position at the top of the SLB Championship standings.
