Sheffield Wednesday are close to finalizing a deal for Josh Windass to extend his contract with the club, according to information from The Star.

The 30-year-old forward, who is among five players nearing the end of their contracts with Wednesday, is reported to have engaged in positive discussions with the club this week. It is anticipated that he will conclude the talks soon, although some specifics are still being negotiated.

Windass played a crucial role in Wednesday’s survival campaign last season, scoring three goals in the final three matches. He has contributed to 57 goals for the club in total, with 40 goals and 17 assists in 135 appearances. It’s understood that new Owls manager Danny Röhl views Windass as a key part of the team’s future.

While talks progress, there is significant interest in Windass from other clubs. The Star previously mentioned MLS clubs and several Championship teams as potential suitors. Birmingham City, recently relegated, made a notable attempt to secure Windass as part of their plans for promotion back to the Championship.

If the new deal is finalized, Windass will continue his tenure at Wednesday for a sixth season, having initially joined from Wigan Athletic in 2020. The club has already secured contracts for important players like Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer.

Among the other players yet to agree to new terms are Di’Shon Bernard, who is also seen as important by Röhl, as well as Dominic Iorfa, Cameron Dawson, and reigning player of the year Will Vaulks. Negotiations with Vaulks are reportedly still ongoing, while Dawson is expected to leave despite being offered a new contract. The club is reportedly considering experienced goalkeeper Ben Hamer and aims to bring back loanee James Beadle.
