Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers will have to act fast to sign January target with two transfer bids launched

The Star believes that Sheffield Wednesday needs to move quickly to sign USA international Duncan McGuire if they want to rekindle their interest in him during the January transfer window.

The Orlando City striker is still in demand despite his four goals in nine MLS appearances this season. He was the focus of a dramatic deadline day back-and-forth that saw him travel to the UK only for his last-minute deal with Blackburn Rovers to fall through owing to shoddy paperwork.

According to The Star, Orlando made McGuire an offer for a new contract on Wednesday, and Belgium and Germany expressed “quite serious” interest. The athlete, who has one cap for his nation and most recently played for the USA’s under-23 team in March, is rumored to have received two bids.

According to sources who spoke with The Star, S6 has not yet made a formal offer for McGuire’s services, despite Wednesday having been monitoring his development since January. It is unclear if the Owls will make a second attempt to sign the forward as they attempt to navigate a crucial start to their summer transfer window.

Ike Ugbo, who is now on loan at the Owls, is reportedly eager to return to the team after his goals helped spark their ultimately successful survival fight. Wednesday’s bids for McGuire followed Ugbo’s January 11 signing.

Wednesday are believed to have made several proposals for the now 23-year-old in a frantic conclusion to the winter window, both before and after Blackburn told McGuire’s representatives that a deal was off while the forward was traveling across the Atlantic to finish moving to Ewood Park.

Before a second proposal could be considered following the successful sale of Blackburn midfielder Adam Wharton to Crystal Palace, McGuire had breakfast at a hotel in Sheffield. Before the paperwork hoax was discovered, the forward, who was born in Nebraska, was announced as a signing with the Rovers.
