Report: Oklahoma Special Teams Coach Jay Nunez Leaving for Alabama Job

Former University of Oklahoma special teams analyst Jay Nunez is making a move to the University of Alabama, where he will serve as the next special teams coordinator. Nunez, originally from Alva, Oklahoma, had been with Oklahoma’s staff since 2022, following a five-year tenure in various capacities at Eastern Michigan.

According to reports from OU Insider’s Parker Thune, who cited unnamed sources, Nunez’s transition to Alabama was reported on Monday night via Twitter.

During his time at Oklahoma, Nunez was responsible for overseeing all special teams activities during practice. However, due to his role as an analyst, he was restricted from coaching during game days. Head coach Brent Venables had assigned individual on-field assistant coaches to each special teams unit.

Before the 2023 season, Nunez received a significant pay increase, going from $110,000 to $250,000, upon his promotion from senior student program coordinator to special teams analyst.

In the 2023 season, the Oklahoma Sooners’ special teams performance was mixed. They ranked sixth in net kickoff return yardage in the Big 12 conference, tenth in punt return yardage, eleventh in field goal percentage, and eighth in net punting.
