Stockport County
Portsmouth is set to benefit financially when a former Charlton and West Ham player completes a move to Stockport.
The midfielder, who spent one season with Colchester, now led by Danny Cowley, has signed a three-year contract with Stockport.
Jay Mingi, a former Pompey midfielder, has completed his transfer to Stockport County, giving the Blues a financial boost before the summer transfer window opens.
The 23-year-old becomes boss Dave Challinor’s first acquisition of the off-season as he gets ready for life in League One the following season after joining the League Two champions from Colchester United for an unknown sum.
The U’s gave Pompey almost £30,000 in training compensation last year after Mingi rejected the chance to sign a new contract at Fratton Park and went to the Jobserve Community Stadium in September. The former Blues manager Danny Cowley revealed to The News earlier this month that a sell-on provision was part of the agreement that sent the former Charlton and West Ham player to Colchester, so the Blues will get more money for the player.
Despite missing a significant amount of time due to a hamstring injury, Mingi made an impression at the U.S. and appeared in 28 games across all competitions. He played a lot of center-back during his productive second half of the season under Cowley, helping Colchester complete the season in 22nd place and maintain their Football League status.
With a final score of 92 points, Stockport defeated Wrexham and Mansfield to win League Two. Challinor is confident that Mingi, who signed a three-year contract, will be a great asset to Edgeley Park.
“Jay had a wonderful finish to the League Two season at Colchester, showcasing his intellect and versatility by occasionally playing as a wide center back, right back, or right wing back in addition to his customary central midfield role,” the manager stated.
We think he has a lot of ability to grow and that his physical attributes—being quick, aggressive, and front-footed—will help him succeed in League One, as he has in the past. From the first day of preseason, we are eager to work with him and integrate him into the team.
Mingi, who spent two seasons with Pompey and made 29 appearances for the team, will join Stockport as soon as the transfer market opens, pending EFL consent.
“Jay is a guy we’ve known about for some time, who has always shown flashes of tremendous potential, although without regular playing time you were unable to see it on a continuous basis,” said Simon Wilson, director of football for Stockport.
That altered in the second part of the season, when he performed admirably for Colchester, playing defense but with a genuine forward-thinking style that we appreciate at County, as fans are aware.
“With his age and physical attributes, we think he has the ability to play higher and we envision him supporting the squad in 2-3 places.”
Pompey has not yet made any announcements on signings, preferring to reveal any activity until the actual opening of the transfer window on June 14.
