Path cleared for Birmingham City to sign Tony Mowbray favourite on free transfer
Andre Dozzell will leave Queens Park Rangers this summer when his contract expires, the team has confirmed.
Dozzell is free to choose a new team because QPR has chosen not to exercise their option to extend his contract by an additional year.Dozzell might end up at Birmingham City if Tony Mowbray takes over as manager again this summer.
After becoming Mowbray’s first recruit as manager, Dozzell played on loan at Blues for the second part of the season. Before enticing Dozzell to St Andrew’s, Mowbray and his assistant Mark Venus pursued him for several years.
After obtaining Dozzell, Mowbray told BirminghamLive in January, “My assistant manager wanted to sign him for five years at every club we’ve been at.” What a fantastic gift. I was a player and coach at Ipswich Town for nine years, where I played alongside Jason Dozzell’s father, so I have a special bond with the team.
“Dozzell is their supply line while he’s on the field, so watch him for QPR.” He provides for them and always looks ahead. He advances each time he makes contact with it.
“Perhaps people like him will truly enjoy their sport, and our supporters will appreciate a top player, when we grow this club and become a possession-based football side.”
But when the Blues attempted to avoid relegation towards the conclusion of the season, Dozzell lost favor with interim manager Gary Rowett. The 25-year-old scored the game-winning goal against Blackburn Rovers in February while playing in 10 games overall for Blues.
Whether the Blues decide to bring Dozzell back permanently this summer is still up in the air. The agreement will most likely depend on whether Mowbray really takes back the managing reins.
