REPORT: Derby County should break transfer habit with move for unproven 28-goal hotshot

Although Derby County has not yet announced which league they will compete in in 2024–2025, people in the background will undoubtedly be keeping an eye out for possible transfer targets.

In the past few seasons, Derby County’s transfer activity has been somewhat limited.

Even though their ownership and financial issues are behind them, the Rams still hire most of their players through loans and free agents; agreements requiring upfront transfer fees are more uncommon.

However, the latter has been more prevalent this season, so perhaps Derby will have the opportunity to cover some new starters’ salaries this summer.

When it comes to signing strikers, the profile has been evident. Conor Washington, Dwight Gayle, James Collins, and Martyn Waghorn—all of whom are at least 31 and have EFL experience—are the Rams’ current permanent roster options.derby county, Opinion: Derby County should break transfer habit with move for unproven 28-goal hotshot

However, Derby County should look to buck that trend with a move for Northern Irish talisman Lee Bonis.

It comes amid another starring campaign in his native, tallying 28 goals and seven assists in 45 games across all competitions.

Bonis hasn’t only been prolific domestically, with two goals in two games against European opponents in qualifiers for the Champions League and Europa Conference League.

He would be a different type of striker for Derby County to recruit because he is a 24-year-old, inexperienced talent who plays outside of the EFL and has the potential to significantly improve their offensive lineup. After playing well for Larne and Portadown in Northern Ireland, it’s about time he got his chance here as well.

This season, the Rams’ strikers have been dependable enough, but none of them are long-term solutions.

The team should be seeking a deal with Lincoln City during the summer transfer window because they could sign Bonis, who fits that criteria.
