“On the right wages…” – Birmingham City reveal talks over new contract

As they get ready for life in League One, Birmingham City has extended a contract offer to Lukas Jutkiewicz.

After completing his control of the team the previous year, Blues entered this season with great anticipation.

Despite a final-day victory over Norwich City, the team’s disastrous on-field performance resulted from the risky move to substitute Wayne Rooney for John Eustace. As a result, the team finished in the bottom three.

Championship standings 2023/24
Team P GD Pts
17 Stoke City 46 -11 56
18 QPR 46 -11 56
19 Blackburn Rovers 46 -14 53
20 Sheffield Wednesday 46 -24 53
21 Plymouth Argyle 46 -11 51
22 Birmingham City (R) 46 -15 50
23 Huddersfield Town (R) 46 -29 45
24 Rotherham United (R) 46 -52 27

However, the way St. Andrew’s decision-makers handled the managerial appointments calls for criticism. They undoubtedly have high goals for the team.

While there is still excitement among supporters for what lies ahead, the top priorities right now are finding a new head coach in the wake of Tony Mowbray’s exit and assembling a team capable of winning the Championship on the first try.

Lukas Jutkiewicz can benefit Birmingham City much.

With several seasoned players moving on, the Blues revealed their retained and released list this week, indicating that work has started on the latter.

Lukas Jutkiewicz

However, Jutkiewicz is one player who is staying put, despite what many may have assumed would happen.

The 35-year-old’s contributions since joining on a temporary loan in 2016 have made him a fan favorite among the Blues faithful.

He has worn the royal blue uniform for almost 300 games in all, scoring some significant goals.

Jutkiewicz had a difficult season as a result of injury concerns that limited him to just 28 games and three goals.

Some believed that Jutkiewicz would depart upon relegation in order for the Blues to restructure their roster, but they have made it clear that they intend to retain the player in question, and negotiations are still ongoing.

Blues supporter Mike told FLW that while Jutkiewicz isn’t the same performer he once was on the field, he still thinks he can bring value to the dressing room and acknowledged that some people might be against retaining him in the lineup.

“I have conflicting feelings about Juke’s new contract,” he remarked.

He’s a legend in the club, no doubt about it, and the supporters adore him in the locker room. So, I totally get it in that regard.

“However, I simply don’t know what he will be able to provide on the pitch. Now thirty-five, he opposes the brand of football the owners have stated they like to see played. When we play straight, he does better.

“Having said that, I do believe he can have an effect and continue to be a very strong influence in the dressing room if he receives the proper compensation.

“I’m not sure about it, but if it makes sense financially, why not give it another year?”

Plans for Birmingham City’s summer

Due to their size for the third division and the aspirations of its owners, Blues are under a lot of pressure to gain promotion the next season and pose a serious threat to their opponents.

With the announcement of the roster, supporters will be happy to see the clear-out begin, and they will want to transfer more players on when the window opens.

After that, Birmingham would have a true fresh start with a new head coach and a number of new players joining the team.

However, Jutkiewicz might still have a lot to offer, and it makes sense that they want to keep him on for another season for a number of reasons. He will also be eager to contribute to a season that results in a promotion.
