Ohio State’s starting left tackle, Josh Simmons, is still expected to miss the rest of the season following an injury sustained during the Buckeyes’ loss to Oregon on Saturday.

In his weekly segment on “Buckeye Roundtable” on 97.1 The Fan, coach Ryan Day stated that Simmons’ injury is “probably” season-ending, maintaining a grim outlook on his recovery.

Day had already expressed concern during the postgame press conference, suggesting Simmons’ chances of returning this season were slim, saying the situation didn’t “look great.” He also mentioned Monday night that tight end Will Kacmarek, who exited after a 32-yard catch on the first drive, is likely to be out for some time, though Day didn’t specify the nature of Kacmarek’s injury.

Simmons was injured in the second quarter while blocking Oregon defensive end Matayo Uiagalelei. As he dropped into pass protection, his left knee appeared to give way, causing him to collapse.

After hitting the turf at Autzen Stadium, Simmons clutched his left knee, drawing immediate attention from the Buckeyes’ medical team near the 20-yard line.

Following several minutes of evaluation, Simmons managed to stand but showed limited movement and was unable to put much weight on his left leg before being carted off the field. He did not return to the game, with redshirt junior Zen Michalski stepping in for the remainder of the contest.

A transfer from San Diego State, Simmons became a starting left tackle last season and quickly established himself as one of Ohio State’s top blockers.

Simmons had given up just two pressures this season, the fewest among Ohio State’s starting offensive linemen, according to Pro Football Focus.

With Simmons sidelined for the foreseeable future, Zen Michalski may continue as the starting left tackle. However, the Buckeyes could also opt to rearrange their offensive line. Tegra Tshabola, the current starting right guard, has prior experience at tackle, and backup interior lineman Austin Siereveld, who has started twice at left guard this season, has also split time with Tshabola at guard, making him a potential option for further adjustments.
