Philadelphia 76ers
Nick Nurse is set to energize 76ers fans with an innovative approach that could lead to successful outcomes. Here’s what to expect.
Despite a humiliating loss, the Philadelphia 76ers uncovered a potentially effective solution to a long-standing issue that could persist this season. The 76ers entered their recent preseason matchup against the Boston Celtics feeling fatigued after playing the Minnesota Timberwolves the night before, leading the coaching staff to rest all their regular players. The outcome? A predictable 50-point defeat at the hands of the fully equipped defending champions.
Naturally, there weren’t many positives to take away from such a blowout, which is rarely the case in games with such lopsided scores. However, there are still some insights to glean from that forgettable experience, even if some might view it merely as fodder for critics.
In fact, head coach Nick Nurse may have stumbled upon a significant breakthrough with a small yet potentially impactful adjustment.
76ers head coach Nick Nurse suggests a potential solution to a longstanding problem. In their game against the Celtics, Nurse opted to start newcomer and NBA returnee Guerschon Yabusele at center—a bold choice, especially given the absence of both Joel Embiid and Andre Drummond. This decision could open up new possibilities for the coaching staff this season.
Although Nurse acknowledged that he doesn’t plan to frequently use Yabusele at center, it’s an option he can utilize when a specific need arises.
While Drummond is undeniably one of the best backup centers in the league, he has a reputation for being a poor free-throw shooter. In situations where Joel Embiid is unavailable or in foul trouble and Drummond takes over, opposing teams are likely to exploit his weaknesses at the free-throw line. This presents a concerning prospect for a player with a career free-throw percentage of just 48.2%.
Yabusele, who appears to be a solid three-point shooter, could be a viable option to address that issue. Therefore, it would be advantageous to give him some early practice as a small-ball center to prepare him for situations where he may need to step up in position.
Nick Nurse is definitely embracing experimentation this preseason. Hopefully, his innovative approach will help the Philadelphia 76ers navigate the various challenges they will encounter in the upcoming season.
