Huddersfield and Birmingham tussle for Sheffield Wednesday agreement ahead of League One return

According to the Sheffield Star, midfielder George Byers of Sheffield Wednesday has drawn interest from Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town.

The midfield player played the second half of the 2023–24 season for Blackpool. Since their final-day loss to Reading condemned them to another season in League One, Byers has had more time to consider his choices away from on-field concerns.

There is one thing that appears definite, and that is his exit from Hillsborough.

It should come as no surprise that The Star has revealed that he will be departing the club when his contract expires this summer, as Danny Rohl leased him out to the third division in January after determining he was surplus to needs.

The Owls have the option to release him at the end of June due to his contract situation, since the player is unlikely to be needed after the team won their Championship survival on the last day of the season earlier this month.

While he was in South Yorkshire, Byers served Wednesday well. However, clubs in the third level apparently showed interest in him since he was a more useful player there.

With Birmingham and Huddersfield, two demoted teams, reportedly showing interest in the midfield player, Byers is destined to return to the English third division.

All three clubs might be desirable destinations with a strong chance of making it back to the Championship, including the second demoted team, Rotherham United.

This summer, the Owls will have to battle to hold onto Di’Shon Bernard.

Along with play-off winners Bolton Wanderers and Oxford United, Barnsley also wants to sign the player. His previous loan club Blackpool wants to keep him.

To give themselves the best opportunity of winning the race for Byers, an appointment must be made as quickly as possible. The Tykes currently lack a permanent manager, with Martin Devaney serving as interim manager after Neill Collins was fired.

Volume of interest is a real positive for George Byers

Byers, who is 27, is in a pivotal moment of his career, so it will be crucial to have as many offers as possible.

He has a lot of interest, which should lead to several contract offers and improve his chances of selecting the perfect location for himself.

His future club choice should be based on several important considerations.

First and foremost, he needs a contract that is quite lengthy in order to give him some financial stability over the medium-to-long period.

Since he’s getting close to his prime and will still have time to grow and improve, he should also be aiming to join a team where he will see a lot of playing time.

Selecting a team that is either already in the Championship or has a strong possibility of getting back there should be very high on Byers’ priority list, as he will also want to play football there in the future.
