‘Genuinely chuffed’: Journalist hails former Sheffield Wednesday ace who has achieved something ‘great’

Two years after his departure from Sheffield Wednesday, Massimo Luongo has received high praise for his performances.

Luongo joined Sheffield Wednesday from QPR in 2019 but struggled with injuries during his time at the club. In his first season, he made only 17 starts, and his injury troubles persisted in his second campaign, with three separate spells on the sidelines. Despite managing only 13 appearances that season, Luongo showed glimpses of his quality.

During the 2021/22 season, Luongo managed to stay fit for a majority of the second half of the campaign, helping Sheffield Wednesday reach the play-offs. He made significant contributions, picking up five assists and was named January’s Player of the Month. Additionally, he earned spots in two EFL Teams of the Week.

However, despite his improved form, Luongo rejected a new contract and left the club to join Middlesbrough in 2022. Unfortunately, his time at the Riverside Stadium was short-lived, lasting only four months before his contract was cancelled, without having made a single appearance.

Despite his struggles with injuries and form at Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough, Luongo’s talent and potential have not gone unnoticed, and he continues to be highly regarded in football circles.

Massimo Luongo’s career took a positive turn when he joined Ipswich Town on a free transfer. Since then, he has found much more success, making 43 appearances this season and playing a key role in Ipswich’s back-to-back promotions to the Premier League.

Luongo’s turnaround has impressed many, including The Star journalist Joe Crann, who praised the 31-year-old for his resilience and determination. Crann described Luongo as a “lovely bloke” and expressed his happiness for the player, whose story has turned out “great” after a tough few years. He wrote on X: “Genuinely chuffed for Massimo Luongo… Was such a lovely bloke to interview. Couldn’t catch a break with us, dealt with so many injuries, had a rough spell at Boro – now he’s fit every week and a Premier League footballer. Great story.”

Luongo’s success with Ipswich Town should give hope to Sheffield Wednesday. Despite being an undeniable talent, Luongo struggled with injuries during his time at Sheffield Wednesday, making it difficult for him to showcase his abilities. However, he has had much better luck at Ipswich and has become a player that not only Sheffield Wednesday but many other clubs would appreciate having in their ranks.

Luongo’s journey with Ipswich, from League One to the Premier League, is inspirational and something that Sheffield Wednesday should take great hope from. If they can keep Danny Rohl and build on their squad, there is no reason why they can’t follow in Ipswich’s footsteps and become the next surprise package in the Championship.
