Former Middlesbrough, Bradford City and Rotherham United man to become free agent after Wigan Athletic release

Wigan Athletic has released Charlie Wyke, a forward who formerly played for Middlesbrough, Bradford City, and Rotherham United.

The veteran frontman’s three-year relationship with the Latics has come to an end because the Latics decided not to extend his contract this summer. It now seems likely that he will become a free agent.

Wyke, who attended Middlesbrough’s academy, is a well-known player in the EFL who has spent a lot of time playing football in Yorkshire. During his 18-month tenure at Bradford City, he demonstrated effectiveness in front of goal, tallying 23 goals and dishing out 13 assists.

In January, Wyke made his way back to Yorkshire, on a loan to Rotherham United from Wigan. Although the transfer brought him back together with Leam Richardson, his former Wigan manager, the Millers’ season ended in relegation to League One.

“Captain Josh Magennis will leave the football club after two and a half seasons of service,” Wigan announced in their retained list announcement. After his contract expires, Ben Amos, Charlie Wyke, Stephen Humphrys, and Tom Pearce—who has been with the Latics for five years—will also move on. Pearce has been with the team since the summer of 2021.

Luke Chambers, Martial Godo, Charlie Goode, Charlie Kelman, Liam Morrison, Liam Shaw, and Kell Watts, who were all on loan from Latics, have all returned to their parent clubs after the season.

“Everyone at Wisconsin Athletic wishes our departing players the best of luck for the future and would like to thank them for their professionalism and devotion throughout their time here.”
