Report: Former Birmingham City manager candidate ‘in the running’ after shock Championship sacking

Following Liam Rosenior’s unexpected dismissal as the Championship Manager of the Season on Tuesday, Steve Cooper is one of the early favorites to take over at Hull City.

The forty-four-year-old, who was on Birmingham City’s payroll as a managerial contender prior to Tony Mowbray’s arrival at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park, is unemployed as of December, having left Nottingham Forest.

Cooper is likely to return to the dugout at some point given his elite and secondary pedigree; the Hull position might be a good fit for him. To prevent tensions from reaching a breaking point, the Tigers need to appoint a deserving successor to diffuse the present furor over Rosenior’s removal.

The goal for the new manager is to get the team into the top six in order to qualify for the Premier League. Cooper more than lives up to the expectations, having led Forest to the top via the play-offs in 2022 and earning one promotion to date.

But Tim Walter, the former manager of Hamburg, is currently the favorite 1/2, so he’s not the only candidate. Comparatively speaking, Cooper’s odds are 5/2.

Walter, 48, has reportedly already made the short list, according to The Telegraph. Hull is reportedly one of his “biggest admirers,” and because the German hasn’t had a job since February, payment would be necessary to retain his services.

It might be a close race for the Hull spot, despite the bookies’ estimates of them being very far apart. Given Walter’s complete lack of expertise in England, hiring him would be extremely risky. Conversely, Cooper’s background speaks for itself.
