Everything You Need to Know About Penn State’s Tyler Warren and Why the 49ers Could Draft Him in Round 1
The 49ers are known for making bold moves, and this year’s NFL Draft could be no exception. While their most glaring needs are on the offensive and defensive lines, San Francisco might throw a curveball by selecting Penn State tight end Tyler Warren with the 11th pick in Round 1.
Warren isn’t just any prospect. He’s widely regarded as the top tight end in this year’s draft class and arguably the best player who could be available when the 49ers are on the clock. This past season, Warren lit up the field with 104 receptions, 1,451 scrimmage yards, and 12 touchdowns—numbers that showcase his versatility and game-changing ability.
Drafting Warren would instantly elevate the 49ers’ offense. He’d be a significant upgrade over Kyle Juszczyk in the starting lineup and a perfect complement to, and eventual successor for, George Kittle. But selecting Warren could also send a message about the future of their All-Pro tight end.
The 49ers have shown they’re not afraid to draft with contract negotiations in mind. Last year, they picked wide receiver Ricky Pearsall in Round 1, despite having more pressing needs. The move created leverage during tense talks with Brandon Aiyuk, who was in the final year of his deal.
Kittle, too, is entering the final year of his contract and coming off one of the best seasons of his career. History suggests he could seek a lucrative extension—and possibly hold out until he gets it, much like Aiyuk, Trent Williams, and Nick Bosa have done in the past.
If the 49ers draft Tyler Warren, it could signal they’re bracing for a challenging negotiation with Kittle. Warren would not only strengthen the team now but also serve as a long-term insurance policy at tight end.
Stay tuned—this pick could reveal much about the 49ers’ plans for the future.
