Complete account of how the Roosters narrowly escaped a major scare and anxiously awaited news on their star player’s injury following a strange try

The Roosters narrowly avoided a major upset, pulling off a late win against the determined Wests Tigers. However, they’ll be anxiously monitoring Jess Sergis’ condition after the star center appeared to suffer a serious right knee injury and was seen in significant pain. Despite this, Sergis made an incredible comeback to score the decisive try.

Sergis had already been playing with her left leg strapped, but the real concern now is her right knee, which was injured in a legitimate tackle by Sarah Togatuki. It seemed like she might be pulled from the field, but the Jillaroos star stayed in play and sealed the game with her next touch. She charged onto a short pass and sprinted 38 meters to score, marking her seventh consecutive NRLW game.

A week after their impressive win against the Broncos with fast-paced ball movement, the Roosters faced challenges with eight errors in the first half. However, they managed to score all four tries in the second half, winning 20-4 with Jayme Fressard scoring twice. The score was tied 4-4 with 11 minutes remaining when Olivia Kernick broke through to give her team the lead.

TEN-ACIOUS TIGERS

The Tigers have now suffered 10 consecutive losses, but this game was their most promising performance of the season. Injuries to key players had a significant impact in Gosford. Harmony Crichton and Kezie Apps both ended the game with ice packs on their right knees. Crichton, the winger, was sidelined after just five minutes, while Apps, the Jillaroos star, left the field early in the second half.

Natasha Penitani also had to leave the field but managed to return in the second half. The Tigers fought fiercely for an hour, only for the Roosters to break their spirits at the last moment. The game began positively for the Tigers, with Tess Staines scoring first off a short dropout. The Tigers managed to frustrate the Roosters’ attack, which had previously scored 48 points against them last year.

In Saturday’s second match, the Sharks climbed to the top of the NRLW ladder after staging a remarkable second-half comeback against the Raiders, who squandered a double-digit lead for the second week in a row. It seemed like the Green Machine would recover from their narrow loss to the Knights last week when they scored the first two tries of the game. However, the Sharks responded with five tries in just 18 minutes, winning 24-12 and remaining unbeaten.

Despite missing key attackers Emma Tonegato and Jada Taylor due to injuries, the Sharks found their rhythm when Tiana Penitani scored a typical try after 45 minutes, powering through three defenders. The Sharks quickly added two more tries within three minutes to take the lead. Nakia Davis-Welsh then scored her first career try, followed by Ellie Johnston sealing the win with another score.

CAPITAL COLLAPSE

Canberra has shown moments of strength this season but has only one win from the first three rounds due to another second-half collapse. Madison Bartlett scored a try in each half, bringing her total to 22—just one shy of Teagan Berry’s NRLW record. Despite spending much of the game on Cronulla’s line, Canberra couldn’t land the decisive blow.

There could be further issues as inspirational lock Simaima Taufa is under scrutiny for a hip-drop tackle late in the game.
