Birmingham City Manager Exclusive: Three-times promotion winner in pole position
According to sources that spoke with Football Insider, Birmingham City has interviewed Alex Neil to become the team’s new manager before the 2019–20 season.
After leaving Stoke City in December 2023, Neil, 42, has been unemployed; nevertheless, he is now prepared to take on managerial duties again with the League One team.
Following Birmingham’s announcement that manager Tony Mowbray will be leaving the team due to health concerns, he is now in a strong position to succeed him permanently.
Under Mowbray’s departure, Gary Rowett had taken over as interim manager; however, despite managing relegation, Football Insider disclosed he would not be considered for the permanent position.
After Birmingham City interview, Alex Neil will succeed Tony Mowbray.
After a tumultuous season during which four managers oversaw the team, Birmingham’s main objective for the upcoming campaign will be to secure promotion back to the Championship.
Despite Wayne Rooney’s strong early-season performances, John Eustace was fired in favor of Rooney, who was then fired and replaced by Mowbray.
To facilitate the preparations for rebuilding for the upcoming season, the 60-year-old did, however, take a forced sick leave in February and did not return.
After interviewing Neil to take over at St Andrew’s, the hunt for a new manager has taken a fresh turn in light of Rowett’s dismissal of the team and promotion to League One.

Three times, with Hamilton Academical from the Scottish Championship, Norwich City from the Championship, and Sunderland from League One, Neil has guided his teams through the divisions.
Though he only won a third of the games he managed while at Stoke, it was the hardest stretch of his career. Nevertheless, he has been targeted to guide Birmingham to promotion at the first attempt.
