Birmingham City ‘enter talks’ with former Leeds United and Sheffield United manager
Birmingham City are reportedly scheduling a meeting with former Leeds United and Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom. Heckingbottom, aged 46, has been without a job since departing from Sheffield United midway through the 2023/24 season, during which the team faced the looming threat of relegation from the Premier League. Notably, Heckingbottom was instrumental in Sheffield United’s ascent to the top flight, securing automatic promotion with a second-placed finish.
The interest in Heckingbottom from Birmingham City underscores the recognition of his coaching expertise. Journalist Alan Nixon, via his Patreon page, reveals that Birmingham is arranging talks with Heckingbottom in the upcoming days. However, competition for his services is stiff, with reports suggesting that Plymouth Argyle is also in contention. Plymouth Argyle, who narrowly avoided relegation, have been manager-less since parting ways with Ian Foster in April.
Heckingbottom’s managerial journey began at Barnsley from 2016 to 2018, followed by a brief stint at Leeds United. Subsequently, he spent a short period at Scottish Premiership club Hibernian before embarking on a new chapter at Sheffield United, initially overseeing the Under-21 side and serving in a caretaker capacity.
However, Birmingham is not solely concentrating on Heckingbottom, as they are engaging with several other candidates before reaching a final decision. Among these contenders is Alex Neil, a former manager of Stoke City, Norwich City, and Sunderland, as reported by The Telegraph. Additionally, Gary Rowett, who served as an interim manager for the final eight games of the season, has also been part of the discussion.
