PREP FOOTBALL: Bettendorf’s Buhr Drops a Cryptic Hint About His College Plans

Growing up as a devoted fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Bettendorf High School senior Caden Buhr is turning a lifelong dream into reality. The talented kicker has accepted a Preferred Walk-On invitation and will join the Hawkeyes in Iowa City next week to begin spring workouts.

“I’m beyond excited. This is a dream come true,” Buhr said. “I’ve always wanted to play for the Hawkeyes. To have this opportunity is incredible. I can’t wait to learn from such an amazing coaching staff and a team of players who’ve competed at the highest level.”

A two-time all-state selection, Buhr earned recognition as one of the top kickers in the nation through standout performances at Kohl’s Kicking Camps and other exposure events. He also made an impression at two University of Iowa kicking camps, which likely caught the eye of Hawkeyes special teams coordinator LeVar Woods.

“Having a strong showing in front of Coach Woods and being able to demonstrate my skills in person helped a lot,” Buhr noted.

Buhr credits much of his development to his private kicking coach, former Hawkeye All-American Keith Duncan, whose expertise played a pivotal role in refining Buhr’s abilities.

“Keith has been the mastermind behind my success,” Buhr said. “He’s the biggest reason I’m the kicker I am today.”

Despite being sidelined early in his senior season due to injury, Buhr demonstrated his skill with impressive stats before his setback: 17 of 19 extra points, 6 of 10 field goals, and a school-record 57-yard kick. Additionally, 26 of his 29 kickoffs resulted in touchbacks, showcasing his powerful leg.

Buhr plans to major in business and accounting at the Tippie College of Business while pursuing his football aspirations. He acknowledged that limited senior action may have slowed his recruitment, though interest from both the Hawkeyes and the University of Northern Iowa remained strong.

The Hawkeyes currently have junior Drew Stevens as the sole kicker on their roster. Stevens was consistent this past season, converting 20 of 23 field goals and all 40 extra points.

Buhr joins a select group of Quad-City athletes on the Hawkeyes roster, including quarterback Kyler Gerardy (North Scott) and linebacker Nolan DeLong (Durant). Pleasant Valley’s Joey VanWetzinga will also enroll early and join the team this month.
