EUGENE, Ore. — On Ohio State’s opening drive against Oregon, quarterback Will Howard scored, but not without controversy.

Near midfield, Howard threw a 32-yard pass to tight end Will Kacmarek. After a struggle for the ball, Oregon linebacker Jeffrey Bassa appeared to come away with what the home crowd thought was an interception. However, officials ruled that Kacmarek had possession and was down before Bassa took the ball.

The play was not reviewed, and three plays later, Howard scored on a 1-yard run. NBC rules analyst Terry McAulay expressed surprise that the play wasn’t reviewed, believing Kacmarek never had full possession and that Bassa was the first to gain control, which would have made it an interception.
