Exclusive: Millwall center back Charlton Athletic is interested in signing
The Millwall center-back Alex Mitchell is getting closer to signing a long-term contract with Charlton Athletic.
The 22-year-old defender was a key member of Lincoln City’s team that only missed out on the League One play-offs the previous season, and he has excelled at all of his loan teams.
After cutting loose Michael Hector and Terell Thomas to challenge Macaulay Gillesphey, Rarmani Edmonds-Green, and Lloyd Jones for a starting position, Addicks boss Nathan Jones wants to add another center-back to his choices.
The strong Mitchell made 41 appearances for the Imps in all competitions.
He made 30 appearances for Leyton Orient in the campaign prior, where he also made an impression.
Mitchell also played for St Johnstone and Bromley’s first teams.
His Den agreement is still in effect for another 12 months.
Mitchell stated in a March interview with our publication that he was committed to playing senior football.
After 104 games, he declared, “I’ve kind of made a career for myself outside of Millwall.”
“I am aware that I am on Millwall’s roster; if things go well there, they go well; if not, they don’t.
“I’m not really anxious about that. I have the opportunity to do what I have done thus far because to Millwall.
“You kind of live in a cocoon growing up in the academy system; you don’t realize how fortunate you are to be able to play football.
“Coming here has perhaps served as a reminder of that for me. I like training and being around Lincoln; I consider it a true honor to be able to perform what I do.
In addition to attempting to make a deal with Japhet Tanganga, who was recently released by Tottenham, Millwall already has a lot of defensive possibilities.
