Wrexham are gearing up for life in League One following their impressive promotion from League Two. The Red Dragons have had a whirlwind journey, having been promoted from the National League in the 2022-23 season and then achieving back-to-back promotions.

Under the guidance of Phil Parkinson, Wrexham finished second in League Two, just behind champions Stockport County, with an impressive tally of 88 points. This remarkable campaign has propelled them into League One, where they will compete for the first time since the 2004-05 season.

The club’s swift rise through the leagues has been a testament to their resilience and determination, and they are now preparing to tackle the challenges that come with competing in a higher tier. With a strong squad and a determined manager, Wrexham will be looking to continue their upward trajectory and make a significant impact in League One.

Wrexham are known to be ambitious under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, so they could target some high-profile players over the coming months as they look to be competitive in the third tier.

Wrexham’s summer transfer plans are heating up as the club looks to strengthen key positions ahead of the new season. FLW’s Wrexham fan pundit Liam Grice has pinpointed a centre-back, a midfielder, and a striker as essential additions, naming Josh Knight, Jamie Lindsay, and Kayden Jackson as ideal targets.

Josh Knight, who impressed at Peterborough United this past season, is high on the list. Knight contributed significantly to his team’s playoff push, scoring six goals and providing four assists in 57 appearances. Although Peterborough have offered him a new contract, Knight has also caught the attention of Bundesliga side Werder Bremen, making his future uncertain.

Midfielder Jamie Lindsay, previously on Wrexham’s radar in January, is another key target. The Red Dragons were in negotiations with Rotherham United over a potential deal, but terms could not be agreed upon at the time. Lindsay, who has since left Rotherham after five years, brings a wealth of experience with eight goals and six assists in 161 games. Wrexham may now have another opportunity to secure his services.

Striker Kayden Jackson, recently released by Ipswich Town, is also being eyed by Wrexham. Jackson has a notable track record, scoring 28 goals and registering 23 assists in 199 appearances during his six-year stint at Ipswich. Although he wasn’t a regular starter in his final two years, Jackson played a crucial role in Ipswich’s back-to-back promotions to the Premier League. Interestingly, Jackson spent the 2015-16 season at Wrexham, and Grice believes a return could be beneficial for both the player and the club.

Liam Grice shared his insights on the potential signings: “In terms of positions Wrexham need to strengthen this summer with the free agents that have become available now, we need a new centre-back, a striker, and a box-to-box midfielder. Striker, I think you should never look back, but Kayden Jackson is a brilliant option at this level. He used to play for us, he’s a really good goalscorer at League One level so that’s an option.”

Regarding the defensive reinforcement, Grice added: “Centre-back, I think Peterborough’s Josh Knight. He may be just out of the realms of possibility, but aim big. He’s a very good defender at this level, he’s proven it over the last few seasons with Peterborough, and he’s out of contract.”

As for midfield options, Grice emphasized the value of Jamie Lindsay: “We were linked with him in January, we were supposed to pay a club-record fee for him, but the deal never materialized, so it makes sense to go back in for him now he’s a free agent to bolster the squad at a level that he’s quite familiar with having played for Rotherham in both League One and the Championship.”

With these potential additions, Wrexham hopes to build a squad capable of achieving their ambitions in the upcoming season.
