New Orleans Saints make massive $11.4 Superdome renovation payment ahead of Super Bowl 59

Super Bowl 59 will take place at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, in front of approximately 75,000 spectators in precisely 260 days. The game will take place inside the Superdome, home of the New Orleans Saints, for the eighth time. This will be the eleventh time that New Orleans has hosted the largest game in professional sports history. Now, considering the popularity of the NFL and the significance of the Super Bowl over the past 60 years, I’m positive that the game will still take place on February 9, 2025, even if Hell truly freezes over on February 8.

That doesn’t mean, however, that a public standoff between the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District (LSED) and the New Orleans Saints wasn’t going to complicate things and make things uglier than they needed to be, if only momentarily. The two parties decided in 2019 to begin a much-needed $550 million rehabilitation project, which was expected to be completed by this summer. However, as Saints President Dennis Lauscha told the Associated Press, “dissatisfaction over the state’s posture in parallel negotiations toward a long-term Superdome lease” was the reason the team had failed to make its final $11.4 million payment since December.

The LSED made their concerns about their talks with the New Orleans Saints public on Wednesday, saying, “That is an entirely separate and independent arrangement.” Under the Superdome Renovation Project Development Agreement, there is no legitimate reason to withhold payments in light of negotiations for a longer-term extension.

The two parties seemed prepared to resume collaboration just one day later, after a conversation between Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson. On Friday, Lauscha and LSED board chairman Rob Vosbein had “a productive chat.”

“The New Orleans Saints diffused a public dispute between the NFL team and state officials who manage the stadium that will host the next Super Bowl by making a $11.4 million payment toward Superdome improvements on Friday.”

As previously stated, Super Bowl 59 will mark the seventh championship game to take place at the New Orleans Superdome, a venue most associated with huge margins of victory until the previous two Super Bowls.
