Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship rivals ‘about to sign’ new manager as Danny Rohl trick repeated

The most recent Championship team to gain from Germany’s managerial exports is Sheffield Wednesday.

Following Liam Rosenior’s unexpected resignation earlier this week, Hull City appears likely to name German Tim Walter as their next manager.

Hull fired Rosenior on Tuesday night after he was unable to guarantee a spot in the Championship play-offs. The Tigers ended the season three points behind Norwich City, who claimed the final slot, after losing at Plymouth Argyle on the last day of play.

The 39-year-old was on the shortlist of three managers for the Championship, along with Kieran McKenna of Ipswich Town and Daniel Farke of Leeds United. The choice surprised supporters. Now that Sheffield Wednesday and other lower-division teams have established the precedent, owner Acun Ilicali is under pressure to find a worthy successor.

Walter is apparently “certain to sign” for Hull, according to Sky Germany. Walter has been one of the favorites to take over at the MKM Arena. The club and manager are in active talks, and there shouldn’t be many problems as Walter hasn’t had a job since leaving Hamburger SV, a lower division German team, in February. The 48-year-old has worked as a reserve for Bayern Munich, Stuttgart, and Holstein Kiel.

When the summer transfer market opens, Walter should be in position to make a move before Hull’s next Championship season begins. With many of Rosenior’s best players from this season on loan and now back at their parent clubs, a lively window is anticipated. The Tigers anticipate pushing for automatic promotion or the play-offs once more.

Walter has only ever worked in his native country, and it seems Hull is trying to emulate the recent Championship winning streak of hiring German head coaches. The most recent team to take this route is Wednesday, who have had remarkable success since hiring Danny Rohl, 35, in October and beating the odds to stay in the Championship.

When Rohl took over at Hillsborough in October, Wednesday was a surefire candidate for relegation, sitting near the bottom of the Championship.
