Coventry City latest: Viktor Gyokeres windfall, Harry Redknapp on Ellis Simms, Man Utd draw

For Coventry City, the season’s finale promises to be tremendously thrilling.

After losing top players Viktor Gyokeres and Gustavo Hamer in the summer, the Sky Blues had a sluggish start to the season and lost to Luton Town in the play-off final.

After dropping as low as 20th in the rankings in late November, Coventry has seen an incredible run of form that has propelled them back into the top six.

Along with their impressive league play, the Sky Blues advanced to the FA Cup quarterfinals at Wembley, where they will face Manchester United the following month after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers just before the international break.

With a game against sixth-place Norwich City coming up, Mark Robins’ team is now four points out of the play-off spots in the Championship standings, sitting in eighth position.

Potential Viktor Gyokeres windfall

Gyokeres, a striker, excelled for Coventry last season, helping them reach the play-off final. In 50 appearances, he scored 22 goals and provided 12 assists. However, in the summer, he signed a £17.5 million contract to join Sporting Lisbon.

Gyokeres has been playing exceptionally well since moving to Portugal, and he is drawing interest from other quarters after scoring 36 goals and dishing out 14 assists in 39 games this season.

Gyokeres, 25, has reportedly drawn the attention of Chelsea in recent months. The Daily Mail claims that the Blues saw the 25-year-old in action for the third time last week while he was representing Sweden internationally.

On Thursday night, Jon Dahl Tomasson’s team lost to Portugal 5-2, but Gyokeres did manage a point, which is sure to have pleased his pursuers.

Gyokeres has reportedly has a €100 million (£85 million) release clause in his contract, so clubs will need to pay a big price to sign him this summer. Arsenal has also been linked to a deal for the striker.

Since the Sky Blues will receive fifteen percent of whatever Sporting pays for Gyokeres, they will undoubtedly be closely monitoring any developments over the next few months.

Regarding his future, Gyokeres said to Football Channel: “I’m not sure. It’s a big sum of money. It doesn’t, however, directly impact me.

“I don’t give the future much thought. Together with Sporting, I want to win the league and the cup. I focused all of my efforts on it while I was on the club team.

It indicates that I did a good job. But since it’s only conjecture, I don’t take it too seriously. It is, of course, enjoyable.

“This summer, we shall see. What will happen is not something I know about myself. The summer is approaching swiftly, but I don’t feel stressed because I love Sporting so much.”

Harry Redknapp issues Ellis Simms claim

After making a huge money move from Everton to Coventry, striker Simms had a sluggish start to his Coventry career, scoring just two goals before the end of December. However, he has been in excellent form ever since.

With 43 games for the Sky Blues, Simms has now scored 14 goals and contributed three assists, including two goals in the FA Cup victory over Wolves.

The 23-year-old’s display at Molineux did not go unnoticed, and Redknapp, the former manager of Tottenham Hotspur, praised him, citing several outstanding qualities.
