NFL Scouting Combine: Theo Johnson of Penn State Delivers a Stellar Performance
Penn State has a history of producing standout NFL Scouting Combine performances, and tight end Theo Johnson’s recent display might just be the most impressive yet.
At the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, Johnson showcased exceptional athleticism, earning a remarkable 9.99 out of 10 on the relative athletic scores (RAS) scale, making it the second-highest value for tight ends in the last 37 years. RAS graded Johnson as “elite” in speed and explosion, along with a “great” rating in size and agility.
Johnson’s standout performance included the second-fastest 40-yard dash time among tight ends (4.57 seconds), tying for the fastest 10-second split (10.55). He also ranked second in both the broad jump (10-5) and vertical jump (39-5). Additionally, Johnson recorded the fastest shuttle time (4.19) among tight ends and placed fifth in the three-cone drill (7.15 seconds).
This extraordinary athleticism, combined with his imposing size of 6-8, 259 pounds, positions Johnson as an enticing prospect for NFL teams in the upcoming draft.
While some critics point to Johnson’s senior-year catch numbers (32 receptions for 325 yards), his diverse contributions to the offense at Penn State showcase his versatility. Operating in various roles, including backfield blocking, slot play, and occasional wide alignments, Johnson expressed gratitude for the opportunity to demonstrate his versatility at Penn State.
Having already enhanced his draft stock with a strong showing at the 2024 Senior Bowl, Johnson is expected to continue rising in the draft rankings. ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller sees him as a potential third tight end drafted, highlighting the demand for a versatile player who excels both as a wide and inline tight end, making him a reliable asset in the middle of the field.
