Ex-Red Sox Fan-Favorite Utility Man Almost Signed With Yankees In Free Agency
Enrique Hernández, a former beloved member of the Boston Red Sox, recently disclosed that he came close to signing with their long-standing rivals, the New York Yankees. After exploring his options in free agency, Hernández ultimately decided to re-sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Hernández initially joined the Red Sox before the 2021 season and remained with the team until he was traded back to the Dodgers in advance of the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline. Reflecting on his free agency experience, Hernández shared insights during an interview with Foul Territory, revealing that the process was marked by uncertainty and sporadic communication from teams.
Despite interest from various clubs, including the Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Angels, and San Francisco Giants, Hernández highlighted that the decision ultimately came down to two major market teams: the Dodgers and the Yankees. In the end, he opted for the Dodgers due to their abundance of left-handed hitters, among other factors.
As a seasoned utility player with a decade of experience, Hernández’s potential signing with the Yankees would have undoubtedly stirred up excitement and intrigue, given the historic rivalry between the two franchises. However, fans will now have to envision what could have been, as Hernández remains a part of the Dodgers organization, where he has established himself as a versatile and valued player.
