Can the Salary Cap Boost Aid the Ravens in Retaining Key Free Agents?

The Baltimore Ravens may now have the opportunity to retain some of their top free agents following the NFL’s announcement of a $30 million increase in the salary cap. Prior to this boost, the Ravens were facing challenges in keeping key Pro Bowl players like Patrick Queen and Kevin Zeitler. The prospect of franchising defensive tackle Justin Madubuike necessitated potential cuts of higher-priced talents and restructuring contracts. However, with the expanded salary cap, the Ravens now have increased flexibility, boasting $16 million in cap space according to Over The Cap.

To accommodate the tag for defensive tackles, set at $22 million, the Ravens need an additional $6 million. Contract restructures for key players such as quarterback Lamar Jackson, left tackle Ronnie Stanley, and defensive backs Marlon Humphrey and Marcus Williams could free up the necessary funds. With all four undergoing restructures, Baltimore could have over $40 million for offseason moves, providing ample room to enhance the roster, although not the highest figure in the league.

While there are other potential moves, the Ravens, facing decisions on numerous free agents, must act swiftly to stay competitive in the AFC. The increased cap space serves as valuable ammunition for the team to make strategic moves and improve its standing in the contender race.
