Despite potential losses to the NFL Draft, the Texas Longhorns are still considered strong contenders for the College Football Playoff, ranking at No. 4 in the recent way-too-early pre-spring Top 25 by On3 Sports. Despite key departures, new head coach Mike Elko’s program is generating optimism, particularly for its adept use of the transfer portal to replenish talent. Notable additions include Alabama tight end Amari Niblack, Alabama wideout Isaiah Bond, Oregon State receiver/returner Silas Bolden, UTSA pass rusher Trey Moore, Clemson safety Andrew Mukuba, and Arizona defensive lineman Tiaoalii Savea.

The Longhorns have addressed defensive gaps and boast an impressive offensive lineup, featuring SEC’s arguably best quarterback in Quinn Ewers, top running back duo Jaydon Blue and Cedric Baxter, and a stellar offensive line led by future first-round pick Kelvin Banks. Additionally, head coach Sarkisian secured a promising 2024 recruiting class, with five-star freshmen Colin Simmons, Xavier Filsaime, Ryan Wingo, Kobe Black, and Brandon Baker expected to contribute significantly. The combination of experienced talent, elite transfers, and a strong recruiting class positions the Longhorns as favorites for the SEC Championship game and the College Football Playoff.
