Now playing in the National League, a once-forgotten Sunderland failure has scored 25 goals in all competitions.

In recent years, Sunderland has had more than its fair share of failures.

Particularly during their four years in League One, the Black Cats brought in a lot of players and eventually let several leave.

Though Will Grigg, a former Northern Ireland international, signed from Wigan Athletic on the January deadline day of 2019, his tenure at the club may stand out as being less successful than many.

According to numerous reports, Sunderland paid £4 million for the now 32-year-old after he scored goals for Wigan in League One.

Will Grigg’s terrible spell in Sunderland work?

Grigg played with Sunderland for just one complete season, the 2019–20 campaign, during which he made 20 appearances in League One and managed just one goal.

The striker would eventually spend time on loan at Rotherham United and MK Dons before arriving at the Dons free agent in 2022.

Grigg played 62 games for Sunderland in all, scoring eight goals.

However, Grigg has already scored 25 goals in all competitions this season while playing for Chesterfield under Paul Cook, 24 of which have come in the National League.

Grigg, who has scored a goal in six of his last seven games for the Spireites, scored against Oxford City on Tuesday night in less than 60 seconds.

With Grigg as the second-highest scorer in the league, Chesterfield leads Barnet by an impressive 23 points in the National League standings.Sunderland v AFC Wimbledon - Sky Bet League One

The wrong club at the wrong time

Grigg admitted afterwards that he ought never to have left Wigan.

Off-field scandals and unrest plagued him during his time at Sunderland, and the COVID-19 outbreak forced the team to cease play.

Grigg appeared to have withered away as a result of these problems, which took the wind out of his sails at a time when Sunderland was under intense pressure to exit League One.

However, he has regained his scoring ability.

His Chesterfield team is having an extraordinary season in the fifth division, and they can undoubtedly return to the Football League before the next campaign thanks to Grigg’s goals.

Given his track record of success, it’s possible that Grigg will continue to score goals in the Football League the next season.

As for Sunderland, Mike Dodds and company are in dire need of a striker with Grigg’s caliber of play, so they’re suddenly looking to rack up points to secure their spot in the Championship.
