22-yo will regret leaving West Ham as new report claims he’s surplus to requirements at PL club
16 months ago, West Ham United gave teenage right-back Harrison Ashby permission to sign for Newcastle United.
Harrison Ashby, who is now 22 years old, has not appeared in a single game for Newcastle’s senior squad since leaving West Ham.
I believe that by passing on the gifted Ashby instead of Ben Johnson at the time, the Hammers made a huge mistake.
He received 365 minutes under the Scot (Transfermarkt), even if David Moyes seldom gave him a chance at the London Stadium.
Give Me Sport claims that Howe at St. James’ Park has declared Ashby “surplus to requirements.”
The Scotland under-21 international’s contract was set to expire in the summer, thus the Hammers were compelled to sell him to the Magpies in January 2023.
He had amazing speed, a cunning delivery, strength in the face of difficulty, and remarkable positional awareness for a young player while he was with West Ham.
His decision to join Newcastle at the time was understandable—after all, he wasn’t receiving enough opportunities under Moyes.
He will undoubtedly reflect on his departure from the London Stadium today and believe that he would have been better off staying there.
A multitude of factors prevented Harrison Ashby from having a very good future at West Ham.
Among those was the fact that he chose not to sign a new contract; given Newcastle’s readiness to let him go, he might be regretting that decision right now.
