Following his brilliant debut while on loan from Celtic, Carlton Palmer feels his former team West Brom needs to do every effort to sign Mikey Johnston permanently.

West Brom’s Mikey Johnston makes an impression

With just one loss in their last eight games, Carlos Corberan’s team has solidified their hold on fifth position as they aim to qualify for the postseason this year.

Championship Table (Ahead of games across 8-10th March)
Team P GD Pts
1 Leicester City 36 41 81
2 Ipswich Town 36 26 78
3 Leeds United 36 38 76
4 Southampton 35 24 70
5 West Brom 36 18 60
6 Hull City 36 7 57
7 Norwich City 36 7 55
8 Coventry City 36 15 54
A big part of that has been Johnston, the winger who joined on loan from Celtic late in the January transfer window. The 24-year-old has adapted very well; against QPR last week, he scored his fourth goal for Albion in eight games with a superb long-range attempt. In addition to his outstanding goals, Johnston’s pace and dribbling ability have made him a continual menace down the flanks. So, supporters are already anticipating that a deal with Celtic can be reached in the summer to complete the transfer.Mikey Johnston

The Ireland international is under contract with the Glasgow giants until 2026, but given his freedom to go despite the team’s difficulties this season, it appears Brendan Rodgers does not see him in his future plans.

Carlton Palmer: The fans’ favorite is Mikey Johnston

Some have questioned why Celtic let him go because their wide players haven’t impressed this season.

However, in an interview with FLW, Palmer clarified that Johnston need a change of clubs and that the Baggies have to make every effort to sign him on a long-term basis.

With Shilen Patel’s recent acquisition of West Brom, a new chapter is beginning at the Hawthorns.

“It’s not surprising that Celtic allowed him to go on loan; with so many players at the football team, some had to leave in order to obtain playing time, and that’s what occurs.

“You want a player to make an impression while out on loan, and Mikey Johnston has done just that. Under Carlos Corberan, he has been nothing short of spectacular, and West Brom is dominating the play-off spots. Reaching the final six would be an incredible accomplishment.

“Johnston still has a contract with Celtic, although negotiations will take place at the end of the current campaign. In my opinion, West Brom ought to pursue bringing him on board permanently.

He has grown to be a fan favorite, and now that Shilen Patel is in charge, perhaps in the summer the manager will have the money to sign players such that, should they not improve this year, West Brom can be in or near the automatic promotion spots the following season. Johnston is another one of those guys that the supporters would undoubtedly want to see at the football team.

Johnston will likely wait until the summer to make a decision about his future; for the time being, he will only be concerned with getting Albion to the Premier League.

On Sunday, Corberan’s team will play again at Huddersfield Town, and Johnston will undoubtedly start in the starting lineup in an effort to continue his incredible play.
