Pep Hamilton, a former NFL assistant and standout quarterback from an HBCU, is one of two candidates who have interviewed for the New England Patriots’ head coaching vacancy. The team is exploring new leadership after parting ways with Jerod Mayo, who recorded a 4-13 season in 2024. Known for his expertise in offensive strategy, Hamilton is a proud graduate of Howard University, where he excelled as a quarterback from 1993 to 1996. During his college career, he played a pivotal role in elevating Howard’s football program while embodying the excellence associated with HBCUs.

After his playing days, Hamilton transitioned to coaching, quickly earning a reputation for developing quarterbacks and leading high-powered offenses. His career spans both the NFL and college football, including stints as the offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers, and Houston Texans. During his time with the Colts, he played a critical role in the development of quarterback Andrew Luck, a relationship that originated at Stanford University, where Hamilton served as Luck’s offensive coordinator.

Hamilton’s coaching experience extends to the XFL, where he served as the head coach and general manager of the DC Defenders. His innovative play-calling and adaptability in diverse environments further showcased his leadership skills. Now, as the Patriots aim to revitalize their offense and rebuild their team culture, Hamilton’s proven track record of quarterback development aligns closely with their current needs.

Although considered an underdog for the role, Hamilton’s appointment would highlight the growing impact of HBCU alumni at the highest levels of professional football. His mix of experience, creativity, and leadership could provide the fresh perspective the Patriots need as they work to reclaim their position as a dominant force in the NFL.
